Cashmere Goats

Cashmere goats piqued our interest because of their hardiness and the fact that they are dual-purpose animals, providing both fiber and meat. They prefer to live outside, with access to a shelter. They are excellent browsers, fertile, easy to look after and easy to handle.

Cashmere goats are not a breed, but a type of goat. To qualify as such, their fiber must be at least 1.25 inches long and measure less than 19 microns in diameter. Their fleece comes in white, soft brown or grey and is harvested by combing or shearing.

Cashmere goats are very personable. They enjoy being around people and are very curious (well, they are goats after all!) They make great “farm pets”, as long as you appreciate their sense of humour and their talent for getting in trouble.

Cashmere goats also provide mild-flavoured and tender meat, called cabriton or chevon.
