Icelandic Sheep

These colorful sheep caught our attention with their looks, but the quality of their meat and their luxurious wool convinced us to add them to our farmstead

Elevage CataraquiIcelandic sheep are in a class of their own. With their big horns and unusual colors and patterns, they don’t look anything like “regular” sheep and don’t behave like them either. They are very alert and determined, and they know how to look after themselves. They do not have a strong flocking instinct, which can make moving them a bit tricky at times.

pasture-basedicelandic SheepThat being said, they are beautiful animals that do very well in a pasture-based environment. The ewes are excellent mothers and the lambs have a very strong desire to live and nurse.

As for the meat, it is very mild and tender. People who say they don’t like lamb always enjoy Icelandic lamb because it doesn’t have a strong taste or smell, even when eaten cold.

Border Leicester sheep

The Border Leicester is a heritage breed of sheep that is now ranked “critical” by Rare Breeds Canada.

Border Leicester SheepThis is unfortunate because they have much to offer, especially to the family farm. Border Leicesters have wonderful, gentle dispositions (even the rams) and are easy to handle (great sheep for beginners!). They are also good foragers and get along on less feed than many other breeds. They are a fairly large sheep with beautiful, lustrous wool that curls into long locks and is very similar to mohair. They also produce wonderfully lean and tender meat.
